The Little Fir Tree is a beautifully told and illustrated fairy tale that children may enjoy on a literal level. For the adult reading this tale, there is much metaphor and much to think about. Some of the things that came to me included why do we want to grow up so quickly? how will we later look back on this rush? what happens when we go from one place to another? how fleeting is joy? can we cycle back to it? what is it like to make room for the next generation? That is quite a lot for a short fairy tale. This is a book to buy for a child you know, both to read now and to save for later. It will remind you to be aware and appreciative of life in the current moment.

The seasons came and went.	Two whole years passed and the little fir tree grew taller. When people came by they said,	“What a fine-looking tree!”	“What a wonderful tree!”

In the evening the room filled with lots of people. When they saw the little fir tree covered in candles and sweeties and baubles, they danced around him with joy.	But the next day, two men carried the little fir tree out of the room and out of the house to the shed. They closed the door, leaving him in the dark. Hours went by, and no one came. “What is happening now?” thought the little fir tree. “This isn’t what I thought the world would be like.”	The children decorated the little fir tree again, but this time with flowers and leaves. He breathed in the fresh air as he heard the laughter of the children. “This is the place for me,” he thought. As the sun warmed his branches and the breeze tickled his leaves, for the first time, the little fir tree was happy.
