I happily confess to being an Anglophile. It all started when I spent part of my junior year of college in Bath. I absolutely fell in love with the city and the country. So, this title was just my cup of (English) tea. Bath is in the southwest and it is an area that I explored in depth. This meant that when I looked at this title, I had a pretty good sense of whether the descriptions and places to visit were accurate and enticing. They are!

I like the book’s organization. There are chapters on interests as, for example, the area for walks and hikes or for history buffs or for foodies and more. There are also sections that are based on geographical areas. Other helpful chapters cover getting around, practical information and things to know before taking off. There are also many maps and links to websites..

Anyone planning to travel in the South Coast area and even armchair travelers are sure to enjoy this book. I know that I did. It is just packed with gorgeous photos and information.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this title. All opinions are my own.

I wonder: Can You Put Me to Bed?

The Tale of the Not-So-Sleepy Sloth

by Erin Guendelsberger

Pub Date 07 Sep 2021

Nothing is quite so challenging for parents as trying to establish their child’s sleep cycle. Many a parent looks forward to peacefully putting a child to sleep and then having some adult time, only to be thwarted (again).

This picture book tells the story of a sloth who is not (!) sleepy. Will he nod off? Take a look at this delightful, interactive story to find out. Hopefully, it will help put your little one to sleep after they have had the chance to enjoy the text and cute illustrations.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this title. All opinions are my own.

Pub Date 07 Sep 2021

Wow! This book is full of inspiration. Whatever sport a rebel girl might be interested in, she can find a role model here. Included are women who play sixteen sports in all, everyone from Serena Williams (tennis) to Simone Biles (gymnast) to Ismita Malaviva (surfer) and others including Lisa Leslie (basketball), Megan Rapinoe (soccer),Tegan Vincent-Cooke (Para dressage rider) and quite a few more.

Each athlete has her story told in two pages. One features text while the other has a gorgeous illustration and quote.

There are a number of activities included at the end of this title as well. For example, there are “write your story”and “what kind of champion are you?”

Note that the final edition of the book may reflect additional information from the Olympics.

I found this to be a wonderful book. Get it for a child in your life. You will both enjoy it.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this title. All opinions are my own.

How will the question be answered? Beautiful World, Where Are You? by Sally Rooney (extract)

#BeautifulWorldWhereAreYou #NetGalley

Pub Date 07 Sep 2021

These comments cover just the first chapter of Sally Rooney’s upcoming new novel. I was intrigued by what I read.

In this chapter, Ms. Rooney does an excellent job of creating an atmosphere. A woman is sitting in a bar alone. It becomes clear that she is waiting for someone. A man enters. He does not know the woman but finds her after checking his phone. Who are they? What, if anything, will they become to one another?

It seems that Ms. Rooney may be planning to answer these questions slowly. Readers learn that the woman is Alice. As the layers unfold, readers discover that she is an author and that she is living rent free in a home that turns out to be a rectory.

Readers learn that the man is Felix. He works in a warehouse and is a native of the place where this scene takes place. It eventually becomes clear that this is some kind of date. The two spend a brief time at Alice’s house before the chapter ends.

And that is all I know without reading the description of the book. I would like to know more. Would you?

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this content. All opinions are my own.

An e book bargain for 4.22.24: The Secret, Book & Scone Society

The Secret, Book & Scone Society (A Secret, Book, and Scone Society Nove

This is the first book that I have read by Ellery Adams and I truly enjoyed it. The protagonist, Nora, is a bookseller who believes that there is a book that is just right for each customer’s particular emotional state; the notion that one could get meaningful suggestions from a bookseller was lovely in this day of internet sales. I enjoyed the many literary references and the back stories of the protagonists. There are also hints of romance. If you like cozies, I would recommend this book highly.
