It was delightful to spend time with: Emma of 83rd Street (Audrey Bellezza and Emily Harding)

Jane Austen’s Emma is one of my favorite books by the author. It has been loved by readers as well. Purists may not want a retelling of this funny and insightful story but I think that those who liked the original could definitely enjoy this one.

The story is updated to New York City’s Upper East Side, one of the most prosperous neighborhoods in Manhattan. As in the original, some people close to Emma have moved; her sister has gotten married and many of her friends have left for time abroad. Emma, herself, is a bit at loose ends, even as she attends grad school.

Characters that readers enjoyed in Emma are here. Her father is now a health food purist. Knightley is her best friend (will there be romance?) and, yes, Emma still thinks that she knows what is best for others. In this novel, it is Nadine with whom Emma becomes friendly and (overly) involved.

All of the elements of the original are here in a charming update. The authors clearly know their Austen. Recommended for those who like classic updates and romantic comedies. If a reader enjoyed Sittenfeld’s, Eligible, I think that they may enjoy this one even more.

Now out: Rebel Girls Animal Allies

The Rebel Girls series is one that consistently offers it readers inspiring short biographies along with lively graphics. This time the editors have turned their gaze on women who care about and work for the betterment of animals.

Some of those featured are well known, as for example, Bindi Irwin, Jane Goodall and Temple Grandin. There are many others to meet as well including activists, filmmakers, conservationists, architects, vets and more. Spending time with all of them is inspiring. At the end of the books, readers will find additional resources.

This title would make an excellent addition to both home and school libraries.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Rebel Girls for this title. All opinions are my own.

Oh, to visit: Paris

Secret Gardens, Hidden Places, and Stories of the City of Light

by Mary McAuliffe

#Paris #NetGalley

The cover of this book will, I think, draw in those who love Paris right away. Inside are a map, photos and many suggestions for places to visit in this over 2,000 year old city.

McAuliffe begins by sharing the history of Paris from its earliest days. Don’t skip this to move to ideas of places to visit as there is much to learn in this section of the book. The author goes on to share her knowledge of the city and offers many good suggestions of places to go.

This title is much more detailed than the average guide book. Those looking for a deep dive into the City of Light and those who want to see less well known venues will find much to admire here. Those who hope to travel to Paris should begin reading this title well in advance. It will enhance their time away.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Rowan & Littlefield for this title. All opinions are my own.

An important topic: How Not to Kill Yourself by Clancy Martin

#HowNottoKillYourself #NetGalley

Many among us have known someone who committed suicide or has contemplated ending their life. It is a very complex issue and trauma.

The author of this book has tried to commit suicide many times, beginning when he was only around six years old. And yet, he is still here. Martin is also a professor of philosophy. Who could have greater insight into the mind of a suicidal person and the many challenges it presents? Martin takes a very deep dive into his subject and looks at it from many perspectives while also sharing his own story.

This book may well not be for everybody. That said, there are some who will find it to be immensely helpful. The author is candid, writes well and has so much to say.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Knopf, Pantheon, Vintage and Anchor for this title. All opinions are my own.

This title was published in March 2023.
