How to Think Like Socrates

Ancient Philosophy as a Way of Life in the Modern World

by Donald J. Robertson

In this book, the author not only helps readers to think like Socrates, he also invites them into Socrates life and times. Robertson notes that some of what is seemingly known about the philosopher may be fictional. Of course, this does not diminish his teachings. There are many things that we, in the present day, can learn from Socrates as this title amply shows.

Recommended to those who enjoy history, philosophy and taking a bit of time to contemplate.

Many thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for this title. All opinions are my own.

An e book bargain-The Consequences of Fear

A Maisie Dobbs Novel

by Jacqueline Winspear

#TheConsequencesofFear #NetGalley

Pub date: March 23, 2021

I have loved the Maisie Dobbs series since the very first named title that was simply called Maisie Dobbs. That first in the series took place during WWI. By the time of the newest novel, Britain is heavily involved in WWII and Maisie is involved in her sixteenth investigation. Over the course of the books, all of which are excellent, Maisie evolves and grows. She goes from being a very bright housemaid to an independent woman who investigates a wide variety of cases, both those that are private and those that are for the government. While most of the books take place in England, Maisie has also been to Gibraltar and Germany. Her relationships deepen and grow and this is one facet of the stories that always brings me back. There are also love, loss and a little girl called Anna as one makes their way through the series.

In this entry, a young boy witnesses a murder. However, he is not believed by everyone. Maisie becomes involved in trying to determine what exactly happened. The concept of honor becomes important to the solving of the case. At the same time, Maisie is interviewing potential agents who, if approved, will be dropped into France as saboteurs and intelligence agents. How will she make decisions when some of the candidates are people she knows? How strained will she be by the constraints of the official secrets act? What will happen with the romantic relationship that has more recently come into her life?

Ms. Winspear has a talent for creating engaging characters. The setting of wartime London also is quite evocative. These are just some of the pleasures that are here for the reader.

This title will be eagerly welcomed by fans of Ms. Dobbs. New readers can jump in too but they may then want to go back to the beginning to see how Maisie evolves and to fully enjoy and engage in her life.

I very much enjoyed this novel. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher. All opinions are my own.

What makes for: A Legend in the Baking

A Novel

by Jamie Wesley

A book with a baking theme and romance seems just right for a Thanksgiving Day read. It is easy to recommend this title for those who want an enjoyable escape for a few hours.

Meet football player, August, who was supposed to be the silent partner in a bakery. How and why did this change? What will happen when he again meets up with his friend’s sister and social media personality Sloane? There will be bakery sprinkles and romantic sparks.

Recommended for romance readers. They may then want to go back to read the first title in this delightful series.

Many thanks to St. Martin’s Press-St. Martin’s Griffin for this title. All opinions are my own.

Plan a visit: Welcome to Beach Town (by Susan Wiggs)-an e book bargain

An e book bargain for 15 April 2024

#WelcometoBeachTown #NetGalley

Welcome to Beach Town will be a real treat for both new and old readers of Susan Wiggs’s books. WTBT is a well written, emotional novel with characters about whom readers will care. The plot is carefully developed and the locales are well described. As a bonus, readers will learn a lot about surfing, to say nothing of human relationships; there are those of parent figure/child, romantic partners, friends and others whom the characters meet along the way.

The story opens as Nikki is about to give her valedictory address at high school graduation. This poor student at a prestigious private school changes her planned remarks at the last minute. Why does she say what she does? How will this decision impact the rest of her life? Pick up this novel to find out.

Nikki grew up in Alara Cove where she was raised by a widowed father and later by an artistic foster mother/family friend. Both of these people had influence on her as did her love of surfing. Readers will get to know others who are important to Nikki as well including her foster sister and close friend Cal as well as Nikki’s first love.

Nikki faces both tragedies and good moments in these pages. As a reader, I longed for her to find happiness and hoped that Ms. Wiggs would not disappoint in that respect. Well, read the story to find out for yourself.

I highly recommend this book. It is one of the author’s best. Library Journal agrees and gave it a starred review. They state: Fans of the prolific Wiggs and of strong women protagonists will stay up all night to finish this speeding bullet to the best-seller list.

Many thanks to NetGally and William Morrow for this title. All opinions are my own.

Carnegie’s Maid by Marie Benedict is an e book bargain

Imagine that your family sends you (alone) to the U.S. because of financial hardship in Ireland and you will need to support your relatives back home. Imagine that you are able to take on someone else’s identity to become the servant of Andrew Carnegie’s mother. Will you be found out? Will your position be secure? These are among the premises of this richly detailed historical novel. Relationships between upstairs and downstairs, specifically between Clara and Andrew Carnegie are a major part of this novel. Read it too to learn more about the business world and women’s roles in the post Civil War U.S. Overall, an enjoyable read.

Indeed, what if: The Year of What If-an e book bargain

A Novel

by Phaedra Patrick

#TheYearofWhatIf #NetGalley

Phaedra Patrick writes stories with heart and warmth. She creates characters with whom readers will enjoy spending time in stories that are about human relationships.

In The Year of What If, protagonist Carla has tried to live life through her mind and logic, rather than with her heart. That heart led her to a first marriage that did not last. Carla subsequently went, against the grain of her family that believes in portents, card readings and more, to form a dating agency based on evidence and careful matches. BUT…what if Carla’s premise is wrong?

Carla is engaged to marry someone with whom she has a very close match. Tom is kind, good and mostly a very safe partner. However, for reasons that readers will learn, Carla starts to think back on relationships that she had during her one time of breaking free when she traveled abroad. Watch for what she then does.

Who should Carla be with? How should she decide? Readers will want the best for her as they read this novel.

Carla and the other characters engage the reader. This is a good choice for an enjoyable summer escape. It will appeal to Ruth Hogan fans.

An e book bargain-The Bookshop Sisterhood

This is the story of four friends who want to open a bookshop. They are Celeste who has recently been a carjacking victim; Toni, an influencer, with some big secrets; Leslie who is facing major crises with both her daughter and husband; and, Yasmeen who begins the book much less privileged than her friends.

This story was a bit over the top at times and melodramatic BUT I could not stop turning the pages. I really wanted to know how things would turn out for each of these women and their store.

As a bonus, the novel gives shout outs to a number of books. Readers may want to add some of these to their own lists.

Those who enjoy stories about friendship and women at crossroads will want to give this title a look.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Harlequin Trade Publishing for this title. All opinions are my own.
