Give peace a chance: John Lennon

by Maria Isabel Sanchez Vegara

#JohnLennon #NetGalley

Here is yet another entry in this wonderful biography series for young children. John Lennon’s story (but not the cause of his death) is told from the time he was a young boy through his first band, the success of the Beatles, John’s meeting Yoko and his deep wish for peace. Readers will also learn some fun facts including what John once wore when he performed and what Brian Eno asked from the Beatles before he took them on.

The illustrations are charming and complement the story. This is another good title for the collection of a child you know.

Goodbye Phone, Hello World: 60 Ways to Disconnect from Tech and Reconnect to Joy

by Paul Greenberg

#GoodbyePhone #NetGalley

How often have you questioned the amount of time that you spend glued to your phone? Is it something that you would like to alter? If you are even thinking about the role of your phone in your life, this title is well worth a look.
Beautifully illustrated and readable, this book offers alternative ways to use one’s time. The author knows whereof he speaks as he ruefully contemplates the time that he spent on his phone, rather than with his son, with both having entered the world around the same time. In order to slow down his son’s acquisition of a phone, the author takes himself away from all of the “smart” aspects of the phone and returns to flip style where all you can do is talk. What did he learn? What did he do instead? What could you do? Read this book to find out. It may intrigue you.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this title in exchange for an honest review.

Philosophy: From the Ancient Greeks to Great Thinkers of Modern Times

by Anne Rooney

#Philosophy #NetGalley

In this title’s introduction, Anne Rooney points out that philosophy is about the big questions in life. She notes that the kinds of issues that we grapple with today are, in many ways, the same as those that the ancient Greeks wrestled with. Over the centuries, beginning with the Greeks, philosophers have engaged with concepts related to being, justice, beauty, ethics, politics and more.

If you are a person who thinks about life’s deepest issues this book will be sure to engage you. The author’s style is readable and the topics that she covers are broad and interesting. Read with her as you think about whether there is a god, how should we live, what makes a good society and more.

I recommend reading this book slowly so that there is time to engage with the concepts and issues raised. It will be time well spent.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this title. All opinions are my own.

Adding to the Family: New Baby!

New Baby! (Terrific Toddlers)

New Baby! is a new title in the Terrific Toddlers series. These books are published in conjunction with the American Psychological Association and have the benefit of that organization’s expertise. Every entry is designed to help parents and children cope and thrive as normative events are experienced.

In this title, Kai is about to become a big brother. What should he expect? How will he manage his feelings? How will mom and dad relate to himt?

Children will watch Kai react to becoming an older sibling. Most importantly they will see that Kai’s moods and feelings are accepted and respected. They will also see that he, of course, remains an important family member.

The section for adults at the end of the book is very helpful. There are suggestions on how to engage a toddler in a sibling’s arrival and recognition of the older child’s needs during this time.

This is a short but very useful book. The text is simple and the illustrations are sweetly engaging. Parents can start reading this title to their child before a baby is born and continue to read it when the new family member arrives. It can offer a jumping off point for age appropriate conversations.

Many thanks to the publisher for this title. All opinions are my own.

Breathe: Meditations for the Soul

by Neale Lundgren

#MeditationsfortheSoul #NetGalley

At the beginning of this title the author shares the journey that led him from a sense of emptiness toward a richer life of the soul. While most readers will not be able to spend time in a monastery as the author did, they can benefit from the wisdom that he imparts in this title.

The author provides a series of chapters that offer meditations practices with breathing techniques, visualizations and affirmations. There are also exercises and quizzes.

For readers who are interested in an exploration of their inner selves and who are open to the practices of meditation, this title is worth a look. Spending a few minutes each day contemplating and breathing can be so enriching.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this book. All opinions are my own.
