Now out: Look At This If You Love Great Photography by Gemma Padley

I recently reviewed another book titled, Look at This if You Love Great Art, and recommended it. I also like this title and think that it is well worth a look. The two books have features in common, especially links to additional resources. This information really gives the interested learner a chance to expand their knowledge base.
Again, the book has fun chapter headings. Some of these include Photos That Make You Look Twice; A Punch in the Gut; Photos That Could be Dreams and Colour is KIng. The photos here are intriguing and often elicit an emotional response in the viewer. The author’s text enabled me to see more in each photo than I might have on my own.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this title. All opinions are my own.

I can’t wait to visit: London’s Museums and Galleries

Exploring the Best of the City’s Art and Culture

by Eleanor Ross

#LondonsMuseumsandGalleries #NetGalley

Pub Date 04 May 2021

This book is a wonderful guide to the richness that is to be found in London’s museums and galleries. It is organized by geographical area, so handy for planning a day’s outings. The well-known is definitely here-The British Museum. The Courtauld, The National Gallery, and the Barbican, to name a few. There are other less well known locations as for example, dental, toy and transport museums, the Churchill War Rooms and so many more. Each succinct entry is full of ideas for things to see. Throughout the text is accompanied by many photos.

I highly recommend this guide for anyone traveling to Britain.

What happens when you’re an: Early Morning Riser

A novel

by Katherine Heiny

#GoldintheAir #NetGalley

Early Morning Riser is a novel of place and character. The setting is small town Michigan which is brought to life with its homes, school, stores and more. The main people that readers follow are Jane and Duncan. Jane is a second grade teacher. She meets Duncan when she gets locked out of her house. They very quickly become involved only for Jane to learn that Duncan has many exes. Their evolving relationship and those around them form the basis for the novel.

This book got excellent reviews. There is much humor here and also some heart. I definitely liked this one but I hoped for a little more. It may just be that some of the humor fell a bit flat for me.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this title. All opinions are my own.

You need resilience: Notes from a Young Black Chef (Adapted for Young Adults)

by Kwame Onwuachi; Joshua David Stein

#NotesfromaYoungBlackChefAdaptedforYoungAdults #NetGalley

This adapted memoir will be a welcome addition to the shelves of high school libraries and the offices of those who offer career guidance. It tells the often gritty story of Kwame Onwuachi and his pathway to becoming a chef with all of the challenges, hard times, racism and triumphs of his evolving story. It is written in an engaging style that will draw readers in. Those who think about wanting to work as a chef will find out how challenging it can be and the sheer amount of grit and hard work that are needed. The satisfactions are also delineated.

I had some knowledge of the author from having seen him on two seasons of Top Chef. The first time he was a contestant and the second a guest judge. That familiarity made me eager to learn more about him as a TV story can never be a full picture. I found it interesting to more fully get to know the man.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this title. All opinions are my own.

Scout is a charmer: The Dog Share by Fiona Gibson…and currently a 99 cent e-book

The Dog Share is just the right kind of novel for when a reader wants to spend time in an idyllic location with an engaging group of characters. The author makes Sgadansky feel so real that I actually googled it; sadly the island is fictional and no real ferry can take the reader there. Its small town ambience, along with the distillery and the beach, are places that readers will enjoy visiting.

Ms. Gibson tells the story of Suzy who takes over the management of a whisky distillery after her partner abandons it to a messy fate. Readers will hope that things work out for Suzy both at the distillery and in life. They will also enjoy getting to know Scout, the stray whom Suzy adopts and the dog in the title. He seems like the perfect pet.

Ricky is the foil to Suzy. He is a music teacher and single dad to son Arthur who loves Scout. Something happened to Arthur’s mother but Ricky is in no hurry to reveal what. Will he and Suzy find love together?

Ricky’s dad is part of the bridge between these characters. He had worked at the distillery but quit in a huff. Can Suzy get him to come back? Will the distillery succeed?

There is enough plot to keep the reader engaged in what is a pleasant light read. I recommend this one if this is a reader’s cup of tea (or whisky).
