Coming HomeFar from the TreeThe Last Chronicle of BarsetOne Wish (Thunder Point series Book 7)I found Far From the Tree to be an amazing book.  The author spent time and wrote about many different kinds of families and the challenges that they faced.  For example, he met with families where a child was deaf, had autism, schizophrenia or other challenges.  It is an incredibly informative read.

Otherwise, a bit of fiction here.  Enjoy.

Rejoice: Snow Song by A. K. Riley

When I was in college my closest friend was from Florida.  She has never seen snow until she came to school in New England.  It was magical for her.

The feelings of magic and possibility are both beautifully conveyed in this title that shows the day of a child when it snows.  The illustrations are soft, sweet, delightful and engaging.  The text is a paean to the glories, beauty, poetry and fun of a snowy day.

This book will make a fine addition to a young child’s library.  Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this title in exchange for an honest review.

Now in paperback: The Spies of Shilling Lane by Jennifer Ryan

The Spies of Shilling Lane: A NovelI read and enjoyed The Chilbury Ladies’ Choir so was thrilled to be offered this e-galley from NetGalley and the publisher.

This novel takes place during WWII. I duly note how many recent historical novels have taken place during this era. Nonetheless, I found this to be one that was a good read.

The novel’s protagonist, Mrs. Braithwaite, (a woman of a certain age), has tried to live her life very much in accord with convention and awareness of social status. She is dethroned from her position as head of the WI early in the book. Over the subsequent course of the novel Mrs. B changes from an unlikable character to a woman with more nuance.

Mrs. B’s emotional and real journeys put her in contact with the unassuming Mr. Norris. Together they move away from their comfort zones, begin thinking more of others and have adventures. Yes, belief must be suspended but one roots for them nonetheless.

There are several story lines that show Mrs. B’s emotional growth. One has to do with a young teacher injured in a bombing raid while another takes place during the blackout in a supposedly safe haven that becomes flooded. The reader also comes to understand Mrs. B’s biography and how it led her to be the person that she was.

There are spies and plots along with counter plots and a depiction of war-torn London. There are the beginnings of a gentle love between the protagonists and other hearts that have been broken.

Mrs. Braithwaite reminds me a bit of Mrs. Bird, the eponymous character in one of 2018’s debut novels. However, unlike Mrs. Bird, Mrs. Braithwaite has the capacity to change.

I enjoyed this novel. Again, thanks to NetGalley and publisher.

To help children feel calm and centered: I Am, I Can 365 affirmations for kids by Wynne Kinder

The time is just right for this book.  It will help children to feel calm, centered and good about themselves.  These are all qualities that will enhance young lives and help kids to cope during our current time of crisis.

The author recalls learning a mantra from her mom when she was young.  This helped her to see the ways in which words can make a difference.  She has grown up to write a helpful book.

This title is divided by months with each month having a theme.  Some of those chosen by the author are Positivity, Growth, Love, Family and Friendship, and Generosity.  Each month has a saying for each day and there are also activities. These include making a coping wheel, for instance. The photos and artwork have been well chosen to enhance the text.

This seems to me to be a positive, self-enhancing title.  I recommend it for children that you know.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this title in exchange for an honest review.

#CatsCafe #NetGalley

I adore this sweet cartoon collection. Cat runs such a helpful cafe for his many featured friends, who each also are the subjects of some of their own cartoons. Coffee lovers will enjoy the many coffee themed strips as Cat takes care of his customers.

This book touches on some universal feelings and truths with its warm humor. I highly recommend it. I feel so much better for visiting Cat’s care.

In the story, detectives Daisy and Basil are ready for a vacation. They decide to go to the Poseidon Diving School for detectives with Ladybug. However, Ladybug is bored and takes off…will he be found? Will our detectives be equal to the task?

This book is intricately and beautifully illustrated. In it readers are encouraged to search for ladybug, someone sleeping, someone crying, five sea snakes and one stripy camouflaged cuttlefish and other items in each scene as they go from Seaweed Central Station to Octopus Gardens, the Museum, the Building Site and more. It is a fun journey.

You will be hungry: Big Love Cooking 75 Recipes for Satisfying, Shareable Comfort Food by Joey Campanaro

This book is just full of wonderful food to share.  There are chapters on Brunch, Soups and Salads, Vegetables, Pasta, Meat and Poultry, Fish and Seafood, Sunday Supper, and Desserts.

There are many photos inside that provide a sense of the origins of the recipes for this author. There are also photos of the food that will make readers hungry.   The author is inspired by his New York City based, West Village, restaurant Little Owl.  His story is told in the introduction.

The book opens with a chapter that suggests the things that one might want to have in a pantry.  And then, come the recipes.  Fontina Sausage Biscuits, anyone?  How about a Warm Radicchio, Pancetta and Gorgonzola Salad or one with Spinach, Avocado and Strawberries with Lemon Poppyseed Dressing? There are so many other recipes in this book as well, seventy-five in all.  Just to name a few; Baked Eggplant Parmesan, Baked Ricotta Crespelle and My Mother’s Ziti in the pasta section.  Keep paging through until you get to desserts like Birthday Rum Cake and Philly Cheesecake with Blueberry Agave Sauce.

This is a very personal feeling cookbook that will leave readers hungry!  Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this title in exchange for an honest review.

Let’s plant: We Are the Gardeners by Joanna Gaines

This is a lovely book about growing a garden with those you love. The illustrations are sweet, gently colorful and evocative. The story is a simple one that is nicely told. A family learns to appreciate growing things. They start with a fern plant and, by the end of the book, have a gorgeous outdoor garden.
The author shows that, as is often true, things go well at times and not so well at others. That first fern plant dies, a victim of over watering. Aphids invade. Earthworms help. Readers will learn that persistence, teamwork and a willingness to fail are important qualities for gardeners.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this title in exchange for an honest review. As we move into spring and summer, this charming book will encourage gardening.

Trouble and a Storm: Death on Tuckernuck by Francine Mathews

Francine Matthews is the talented author of two mystery series.  As Ms. Matthews, she writes the Merry Folger series and, as Stephanie Barron, she pens a series with Jane Austen as the protagonist.  I have always preferred the Nantucket based series.

I had not read a book by this author for a number of years but the return was satisfying and easy.  I remembered the characters, loved the settings and expected a good mystery.  The author did not disappoint.

Throughout this novel, weather was a main character.  There was a huge hurricane  striking the island.  As someone who has been at home for weeks, the awesomeness of Mother Nature really struck me.

Tuckernuck, the island named in the title of this book, is off the coast of Nantucket.  It is a real place that sounds very beautiful.  Much of the action of the novel takes place here.

I don’t want to give any spoilers but suffice it to say that there are murders that need to be solved.  Readers may think, early on, that they have figured everything out and may even think of putting the book down…Don’t. There are sufficient complications to keep you turning the pages.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this title in exchange for an honest review.  I enjoyed spending time with this series, an old favorite, again.
