Now out: The Forgotten Palace by Alexandra Walsh

Here is a fairly long (365 page) book in which readers can immerse themselves and enjoy a bit of escapist fiction. The novel is a dual timeline one that has good characters and intriguing settings.

In 1900, Alice is the main character. She is looking to escape her life and takes the opportunity to leave England for Europe. She has that fairly well-known experience of meeting a stranger on a train. This leads to ripples and repercussions. Some of these have to do with ancient Knossos, definitely a part of the story that was interesting

Somewhat similarly named Eloise’s story is told 100 years later. And, what will readers make of her last name, De’ath? To escape a widowhood in which she is not mourning, Eloise escapes to Crete where Alice went all those years ago.

How will the lives of these two women intersect? In what ways are they alike and different? What will be learned about the Forgotten Palace and ancient history? How will Ariadne, a woman from Greek legend, fit in the story? It was a fun read to find out the answers.

I would definitely recommend this book to those who enjoy women’s fiction with a historical twist.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for this title. All opinions are my own.

I love to read, recommend books and open the world of reading to others. I tutor to ensure that the next generation of readers will know the joys of a good book because their reading skills have improved. I am an avid reader, especially of mysteries and fiction. I believe that two of the world's greatest inventions were the public library and eyeglasses!
