Dip in: The Dhammapada

The Dhammapada is a collection of sayings from the Buddha. There is so much wisdom to be found within these pages. The book includes a section written by the translator and an information packed introduction. Then come the sayings; each of them is worth a ponder.

Highly recommended for those who are looking for insight from one of the world’s greatest thinkers.

A good cozy: On Spine of Death by Tamara Berry

Poisoned Pen Press is one of my favorites. They just keep publishing good cozy mysteries (as well as titles of classic mysteries from the British Library). I always look forward to sitting down with one of their novels.

This book is the second in a series. A third entry will be published in spring 2023. Here Tess and her daughter are trying to open a bookshop in their community. Of course, things do not go according to plan. They find bones and need to learn whose they are, how they got there and why. Who was responsible? Worst of all, some suspect Tess’s family member.

Trust that all will be solved and that the process will be enjoyable for readers. I loved that Tess was an author and that a bookstore was viewed as important to a community. Since, I have not yet read the first book, I also enjoyed getting to know Sheriff Boyd.

“A prospective bookstore owner learns that renovations can be murder…juggling one snarky sheriff, one junior G-man, and three skeletons [attempts to overwhelm] Berry’s seasoned heroine.” ― Kirkus Reviews

Little Imperfections

A Tall Tale of Growing Up Different

by Peet Montzingo, Rockwell Sands

Unlike many others, I did not know who Peet was before I began to read this book. I had a very strong sense of who he was by the time I read the last page.

For those who don’t know, Peet was a “normal” height child in a family of little people. In this brightly illustrated, rhyming title, he recounts his experiences growing up. It was not always easy for Peet (or anyone else in his family) but he found his way. His message is that others can too.

This is a children’s picture book but if it is to be read with very young children, and even with older kids, discussion seems important. There is Peet’s own unique story but also a branch out to the ways in which many may feel different or struggle when growing up.

A lasting bond: The Baby and Me by Christianne Jones

#TheBabyandMe #NetGalley

As is true for many books addressed to young children, the text in this one is rhyming. The illustrations represent many different families and interactions. The tone is upbeat and positive.

This book offers a nice and optimistic look at the sibling bond. However, I think that this would be best as one of several books that a family purchases for an older sibling. For example, in A Baby Sister for Frances, it takes the older child a bit longer to come around. Some kids will relate to how Frances feels.

How Arthur and Johnnie Changed Tennis Forever

by Judy Allen Dodson

#TheAsheBrothers #NetGalley

In 1968, Arthur Ashe made history and tennis entered a new era. This title for children opens with this wonderful event. The story then goes on to tell about Arthur and his brother Johnnie’s childhoods in a segregated South. How did they get from one place to the next? Kids should read this title to find out.

The tennis is, of course, the thing but I found the relationship between the two brothers to be quite touching. Find out what Johnnie did for Arthur-what love.

This illustrated title is recommended for home and school libraries, and for fans of tennis and biographies, along with those with an interest in segregation and its impact..
