Now out: I Really Needed This Today by Hoda Kotb

Hoda Kotb is well known as a host of the Today show. She is also an adoptive parent. In this book, M. Kotb has collected a variety of inspirational quotes with one for every day of the year. They are uplifting and positive morsels for reflection. In some instances, Ms. Kotb has added her own thoughts or following the quote. This is a nice book for a day when you are looking for a small uplift and perhaps something to think about.

Sir Tim is a Little Jealous by Judith Koppens

This is a nicely illustrated story that is designed to address an issue that children may often feel and to offer some ways to deal with it.  In this book, Sir Tim goes to the park with his best friend, only to feel left out when she plays with another child.  Sir Tim keeps trying to get her attention, hoping that she will admire him.  He continues in his exploits until he finally takes a fall from a tree.  At this point, Sara comes over, acknowledges how Tim feels and offers that she and Tim can play with other children together.

This book will work best if children are encouraged to talk about their feelings and the story.  For example, how did Tim feel?  What did  he do?  Did he have other choices?  Do you think that it was a good idea to climb the tree? Tim did not walk over to his friend; do you think that might have been a good idea?

The Easy 30-Minute Cookbook 100 Fast and Healthy Recipes for Busy People by Taylor Ellingson

This is a great cookbook for those who want to get a good meal with healthy ingredients on the table quickly.  It is also an excellent resource for beginning cooks; it will help them to feel confident and perhaps ready to branch out to more complicated recipes.

The author’s style is conversational.  The tone of the book is that of having a friend come over and give some cooking advice.  The book starts with information including ingredients and supplies to have at hand.  The recipes that follow include breakfasts,  salads and soups, handhelds, vegetarian, seafood, pork and beef.  Just a few of the recipes include chorizo baked eggs, chipotle black been soup, pesto turkey burgers, tomato and goat cheese tart, thai peanut vegetable bowls, coconut curry mussels, creamy chicken sausage pesto pasta….well, you get the idea.  100 easy to follow recipes in all.

I will make good use of this book.  Will you?

SAMPLE RECIPE: STRAWBERRY CAULIFLOWER SMOOTHIE

SERVES: 2 to 3 | PREP TIME: 5 minutes

Did I lose you at cauliflower? I promise—you can’t taste it! I started adding cauliflower to all of my smoothies a couple years ago and have never looked back. Cauliflower adds a dose of nutrients (vitamins C, K, and B6), fiber, and antioxidants, and you really can’t taste it. This strawberry smoothie gets an even bigger health boost from the ground flaxseed and chia seeds, which are optional but always make me feel like I’m getting the most out of my smoothies.

INSTRUCTIONS

Prepare the smoothie. In a high-speed blender, combine the milk, strawberries, banana, cauliflower, honey, flaxseed (if using), and chia seeds (if using). Blend on high speed until smooth and creamy.

Per Serving: Calories: 259; Saturated Fat: 0g; Total Fat: 6g; Protein: 4g; Total Carbs: 50g; Fiber: 8g; Sodium: 376mg

Simple Swap: Feel free to use fresh strawberries and bananas, and add ½ cup of ice. This recipe is best with frozen cauliflower, as it adds a creaminess to the consistency

INGREDIENTS:

  • 4 cups unsweetened vanilla almond milk
  • 2 cups frozen strawberries
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 cup frozen cauliflower
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 2 tablespoons ground flaxseed (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds (optional)

Now out: A Christmas Gathering by Anne Perry

A Christmas Gathering is this year’s seasonal novella written by Anne Perry. This one features two of my favorite Anne Perry characters, Vespasia and Victor Narraway. Fans of the Thomas Pitt series will know these characters well but the book can also be read as a standalone.

Vespasia is a woman of a certain age and she has the beauty and wisdom that those of her age hope for. Victor has a difficult past history; among other jobs, he was the head of Special Branch which dealt with crimes around terrorism and other issues.

The two are invited to a house party over the lead up to Christmas. As it turns out, Victor has a job to do while there although he does not initially tell Vespasia this. Also at the house are the person assigned to pass a confidential report to Victor and someone who is looking to hurt Victor. Victor, himself, is aware of the similarities between this assignment and one in his past when he failed. This failure has troubled him for twenty or more years.

The case is solved in time for Victor and Vespasia to welcome the holiday. Along the way, there is much wisdom dispensed, some of it centering on the need to forgive oneself one’s human failings. In addition there is much wit in this book as Vespasia spars with at least one of the other women in the house party.

This novella is a quick read and one that will be welcomed by Anne Perry’s many readers. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this title in exchange for an honest review.

A new look at Harry: Law Made Fun Through Harry Potter’s Adventures 99 Lessons in Law From the Wizarding World For Fans of All Ages by Karen Morris, Bradley S. Carroll

This book, Law Made Fun Through Harry Potter’s Adventures, is very clever. I think that it will be enjoyed by fans of the series as it gives something new to think about and provides an opportunity to re-visit many episodes in the books.

The authors point out that the world of Harry Potter is governed by rules and laws. There are controls in the society as with the Ministry of Magic and the rules of Hogwarts. The authors encourage readers to think about the construct of this world and J. K. Rowling’s cleverness.

The book then goes on to examine different aspects of law. I will just include the first from the book. This chapter examines the law as it applies to adoption, foster care and the treatment of children. This is looked at through what happens to Harry at the Durstleys and to Tom Riddle at an orphanage. The points of law are accurate from what I can see.

This book gives a fun way to learn about law and to enjoy those in Harry’s world.

Now out: The Old Success by Martha Grimes

The Old Success follows last year’s The Knowledge, a book that I really enjoyed. The Old Success is not quite as good but will still be welcomed by fans of Richard Jury and his eccentric circle of friends. Old readers, for example, will probably love Melrose’s latest attempt to get at his aunt. You do not have to have read all the books in the series to pick this up but it may help to know a bit about the cast.

In this novel, there are three murders. One takes place in the Scilly Islands, one in Exeter Cathedral and one on a family estate. Are they linked, and if they are, what is the connection?

As usual, there are characters who are children and essential to the story. In this case, the reader meets Zillah and Zoe. What did they witness? What is their connection to the bigger mystery surrounding the deaths?

The title of the book comes from the name of a pub, as is usual for Martha Grimes. Those in the pubs are witnesses and friends, including a retired police officer who solved all his cases. There is also his granddaughter who is talented at working with horses. Quite a mix.

Of course, all is solved. I read this book quickly. I rate it at 3 stars.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this advance read in exchange for an honest review. The book publishes in November.

Review

Praise for The Old Success:
“Entertaining . . . witty dialogue keeps the action moving to the satisfying conclusion. Series fans and newcomers alike will have fun.”―Publishers Weekly
“In terms of verbiage, slang and speech pattern, [Grimes] channels the British vernacular flawlessly. Some interesting subplots (one with a race horse, one with a race car and one with an updated take on the Baker Street Irregulars) help to tie up some loose ends and keep the reader guessing as they wait for the surprising big reveal.”―BookPage

Geraldine and the Most Spectacular Science Project by Author Sol Regwan and Illustrator by Denise Muzzio

Geraldine is a second grader who has trouble concentrating at school; at times, her head is literally in the clouds.  Geraldine’s teacher describes her as feisty while her fellow students find her to be silly.

One day at school, Geraldine perks up.  Her teacher has announced the science fair contest.  This speaks to all of Geraldine’s interests and talents.  What will her project be?  Will it be well received?

Young readers will enjoy this story of a girl who follows her own path and uses her imagination and talents to show her world the planet Mars.  It can be read as a story of finding your own way and not being overly focused on how one is viewed by peers.

The Seven Sisters Series by Lucinda Riley

The Sun Sister (The Seven Sisters)I am so excited to have just gotten this book from Kenny’s Bookshop in Ireland.  I live in the U.S. where the book does not come out until May.  I did not want to wait!  This is a series that I have really enjoyed.  I will review this title in the future…maybe it will be a while as this clocks in at over 800 pages.

Below are posts on the other novels in the series.  There will be one last one published in the future.

Have you read this series?  What did you think if you did?

The Moon Sister

I have truly enjoyed every book in the Seven Sisters series by Lucinda Riley. The Moon Sister is book five. I am sad that there can only be two more to come. In fact, I read this book slowly as I wanted to savor it and make it last as long as possible.

This entry tells the story of Tiggy. It takes place in Scotland, Spain, South America, New York and Switzerland. As is true for each novel in the series, there are dual story lines. Tiggy’s story takes place in the present while the past story line is about Tiggy’s birth family. Both stories are compelling.

In the present the reader follows Tiggy as she tries to make sense of her life and gifts, especially a talent for caring for and healing animals. There is romance for her as well.

The past story is about Tiggy’s birth mother, Lucia, and her family. They are gypsies who lived in the caves at Sacromonte, in the shadow of the Alhambra. The culture of the people who live there is fascinating and well described. Readers also experience the Spanish Civil War as Tiggy’s family struggles with life under a fascist regime.

From a young age, Lucia has a talent for flamenco dancing. This will take her around the world but at some cost. Lucia and Tiggy’s stories intersect when Tiggy meets Chilly, a man who knew Lucia’s family in Spain.

I recommend the entire series for those of you who enjoy historical novels and novels that are long enough that you can move into them for a while. I am already looking forward to the next in the series.

I’ve already blogged about the first three books in this series; they are The Seven Sisters, The Storm Sister and The Shadow Sister. So…that makes The Pearl Sister, book four, with three more still to come. I was very eager to read this book so ordered it from England as it had not yet released in the U.S.. As in all of the novels in the series, this one is about a sister who was adopted as a baby. CeeCee, learns about herself and her birth family along with the reader. Parts of the novel takes place in the present while the story of CeeCee’s birth family takes place in the past. The parts of the novel join together well. The characters are vivid and their stories well developed. Australia is the setting for much of the novel and the historical background was fascinating; I learned about pearl divers, the fate of children who were sent to orphanages because of being aborigine and Caucasian and about aboriginal art and beliefs. Some suspension of disbelief is required but I was more than willing. If you enjoy historical/present tense novels with a good story in a long book, this one is for you

The novels in the Seven Sisters’ series are the first books that I have read by this author, although she has written other books before embarking on this series. If you are able to suspend some disbelief around the formation of the family and how each sister could be connected to an historical person and time, these interlocking novels are a fun read. Pa Salt has died (or has he?) leaving behind the six daughters whom he adopted. There is a mysterious seventh daughter as well. Each of Pa’s children is given clues to their biological family and, of course, each pursues her past. The Seven Sisters takes the reader to Rio; The Storm Sister to Norway and The Shadow Sister to England. The fourth book The Pearl Sister is to be released early next year, although it is out in the UK. I plan to purchase it as sadly I was not approved to read this by my wonderful NetGalley. The books are long but in a good way; the reader can relax and watch the stories unfold. Not recommended for those who prefer literary fiction but otherwise, travel, find romance and be exposed to a bit of history with these siblings. There will be several more novels forthcoming before all is revealed!
